The village was named Frenaros because of the many well in the village back in ancient times. Some others are of the opinion that French monks, who made this village their abode some 800 years ago, gave it this name. The main occupation of the village people is tourism driven – hotels, restaurants, shops etc. Aiya Napa, the hedonistic party capital of Cyprus is close to this village. The village has some important monuments such as The Town Hall, The Heroes Monument, and the Church of Archangelos Michael.
